Huawei Launches the StorySign App for Deaf Children

StorySign App

Smartphone giant Huawei launched a new app this month that helps deaf children and their parents learn to read together.StorySign is an artificial intelligence powered app featuring Star, a fun and friendly avatar who translates children’s books into sign language so parents and deaf children can enjoy story time together.

The app is free to download in Ireland and features classic kids’ book “Where’s Spot” on launch, with more books set to join the StorySign line-up in the coming months.

Huawei launched the app in partnership with the Irish Deaf Society earlier this month as part of a campaign to raise awareness and support for the charity. StorySign is a unique AI-powered app designed to transform story time for parents with deaf children—simply hold your smartphone up to the page and Star will sign the highlighted words of the story, enabling parents and children to read together at the same time.

Speaking about the launch of the app, Andrew Garrihy, CMO of Huawei Western Europe, said:

“At Huawei, we believe in the power of AI and that technology can make a positive difference in the world. We created StorySign to help make it possible for families with deaf children to enjoy an enriched story time. We hope that by raising awareness of deaf literacy issues, people will be encouraged to donate to or support one of the fantastic charity partners we are working with across Europe.”

StorySign is free to download from the Google Play Store.
